| After finishing
his schooling, Bernard moved from the remote city of Les Cayes, on Haiti's
southern peninsula, to the capital. In Port-au-Prince, surrounded by the
colorful canvases of his fellow countrymen, he began painting, studying
with Chikel until 1982. Bernard does many
different subjects but his fanciful paintings of black panthers, with
their startled expressions (which often look as though they've been
"caught" at something) have gained him wide and growing popularity. We
consider him to be one of the "emerging" artists in this generation of
Haitian art.
