One of the best of the Haitian "jungle"
artists, Estigene was inspired to begin painting by watching his good friend
Carlo Jn. Baptiste work. He
became an apprentice of Saincilius Ismael, the
originator of the Artibonite school. Estigene's work uses intense color and
decoratively patterned foiliage in combination with the strong directional
design provided by his animal figures. These peaceful kingdoms are full of
detail and a pleasure to view.
In recent years, Estigene has begun an
exploration of the mysteries of the spirit world.
These darker, almost surreal paintings are an
interesting contrast to his lighthearted jungle
scenes.
