Schools, Styles And Artists: A Sense of History |
| Haiti is a nation with a unique history. Discovered by Columbus in 1492, it became a French colony in the 17th century. It gained its independence from France in 1804, after a 12 year slave rebellion led by Toussaint l'Ouverture. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the nation continued to experience considerable strife, under the leadership of a series of dictators. Although the nation held its first free elections in 1990, the people still struggle with political and economic difficulties. However, the spirit that allowed the Haitian people to establish the worlds first black republic cannot be suppressed. They continue to work and hope for a better future. | ![]() Jn.Claude St.Croix (98-1465) 12x16 |
